Objectives

At the conclusion of this block of instruction:

  1. Students will be able to recognize what items were common during 1814 and which objects we use today. For assessment, students will list five additional modern day objects which were not available in 1814.

  2. Students will understand the differences and similarities between historic objects and those from the present-day. They will better understand the “past” and “present” in terms of time.

Procedure

  • Step 1: Past vs. Present (4 Minutes)
Explain to students that they are going to explore objects from 1814 and present-day objects. “What is the past?” “What is present?” “How were things different in the past?” “How are they the same as they are today?” “How many years ago was 2014?” Show students timeline to help them understand 200 years ago.

  • Step 2: Lesson Rationale (1 Minute)
Explain to students that they are going look at objects are decide if they are from 1814 or today.

  • Step 3: Framing the learning activity. (5 Minutes)
Show students a receipt from 1814 and one from 2014. “What are the similarities and differences?” “Would someone today write a receipt for the same items as they did in 1814?” “Would someone in 1814 create the same type of receipt used in 2014?”

In pairs cut out the objects from 1814 and 2014 and glue them their columns.
