K-12 Classroom Lessons

The people who lived in Baltimore during the War of 1812, left behind letters, receipts, artwork and first-person accounts. By analyzing these primary sources, students will explore these individuals’ lives, hopes and concerns as they protected Maryland against British attacks. In accordance with both National and Maryland Common Core standards, the following classroom lessons provide teachers with detailed instructions and materials which bring the War of 1812 into their classrooms. Each lesson provides an introduction, objectives, procedure, topic background, standards addressed, classwork/homework, references and the needed primary sources documents (as well as the transcriptions for more difficult to read cursive-written sources). Lessons run for a 50-minute class period or, for younger learners, a 30-minute period. Additional lessons will be posted for corresponding future exhibits.
